Republic Day in Nepal: A Brief History
Republic Day is a significant day in the history of Nepal. It marks the end of the 240-year-long monarchy and the establishment of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. Republic Day is celebrated every year on Jestha 15th in the Nepali calendar.
Background:
The establishment of a republic in Nepal was the result of a long political struggle and movement. The Shah dynasty ruled Nepal from 1768 to 2008. Over time, political awareness among the people grew, and so did the demand for democratic rights.
Key Events:
-
The Revolution of 2007 BS (1951 AD): This marked the end of the Rana regime and the initial establishment of democracy. However, the King's active role remained.
-
2017 BS (1960 AD): King Mahendra overthrew the democratic government and implemented the partyless Panchayat system.
-
The People's Movement of 2046 BS (1990 AD): This movement led to the end of the Panchayat system and the restoration of constitutional monarchy and multi-party democracy.
-
The Maoist People's War from 2052-2062 BS (1996-2006 AD): The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) launched an armed insurgency demanding the end of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic. This caused significant political and social upheaval in the country.
-
The Second People's Movement of 2062/63 BS (2006 AD): This movement, a joint effort by the Maoists and seven major political parties, forced King Gyanendra to relinquish direct rule and reinstate the dissolved parliament.
-
Constituent Assembly Elections (28th Chaitra 2064 BS, April 10, 2008 AD): Elections for a Constituent Assembly were held to establish a republic and draft a new constitution.
-
Declaration of the Republic (15th Jestha 2065 BS, May 28, 2008 AD): The first meeting of the newly elected Constituent Assembly declared Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic. With this, the monarchy was formally abolished, and Dr. Ram Baran Yadav became the first President of Nepal.
Current Situation:
After the establishment of the republic, Nepal adopted a new constitution (promulgated in 2072 BS, 2015 AD) and a federal structure. The country is striving for political stability, economic development, and social justice. Republic Day commemorates all the martyrs and citizens who sacrificed their lives and struggled for democratic change in the country.
This is a brief glimpse into Nepal's journey to becoming a republic.
